There are reviews and then there are reviews.

I looked up a book on Amazon. It had five reader reviews, all five stars. The more objective reviews from places like Publishers Weekly and Booklist were kind, but not enthusiastic.

My thought (fair or not): Her friends wrote the reader reviews.

A good review alone does not lead me to read a book. The book also has to have something which hooks me. On the other hand, I can be turned away from a book that hooked me by a whole series of average or negative reviews.

So reviews matter, especially if I've read several from the same reviewer and know where that person is coming from.

You've said it for me, Joe, in that last paragraph.
