My writing goals for 2009

Friday, January 2, 2009

"Hammett was spare, hard-boiled, but he did over and over what only the best writers can ever do. He wrote scenes that seemed never to have been written before." --Raymond Chandler.

I read a NY Times best-selling mystery book the other day. It was by a person who makes millions of dollars writing. And my response was, "Same ol', same ol'." It had murders in all the right places, complications in the story just where there should be complications in the story, attacks on the main characters just when the story was about to lag, and of course, the arch-villain survived to be in another book. But...

There is no greater thing to be said about a writer than what Raymond Chandler said about Dashiell Hammett.

Chandler also said, "Hammett gave murder back to the kind of people that commit it for reasons, not just to provide a corpse."

May I work to do the same.
