Sunday Quote

Sunday, March 1, 2009

Some things never change. The exploitation of ordinary people by big businesses is something that has been happening for a long time. Here is a quote from a book published in 1868.

Rosanna Spearman had been a thief, and not being of the sort that get up Companies in the City, and rob from thousands, instead of only robbing from one, the law laid hold of her. . .

Sad but true. I've never understood why white-collar thieves get less jail time than their blue-collar counterparts. Having a nice home and a college degree, being well-spoken and (mostly) white really shouldn't have so much bearing on conviction and sentencing. People like Madoff, the Enron crowd, et al, really don't belong among civilized people no matter how beautifully they mimic remorse.

And don't get me started on insurance companies...
