Sunday Quote

Sunday, August 23, 2009

I'm a detective and expecting me to run criminals down and then let them go free is like asking a dog to catch a rabbit and let it go. It can be done, all right, and sometimes it is done, but it's not the natural thing.

Sometimes I think Hammett's words were expressly written for Bogey to say. I know that's not true, but still.

I put that in because I think it states an almost unbreakable rule for writers. If your protagonist finds the murderer and then, for some reason, lets him or her go, most of the time you disappoint the reader.

Joe - that always bothered Daddy when he was Sheriff - he would catch them - then the Judge or whoever would let them go. One time he even had a statement that the guy gave saying he was guilty and they let him go!! Go figure!!!

Yeah. Every once in a while, I still think about Clay and his work as Sheriff. He was good one!
